Just How BIG is God?
Have you ever stood by yourself at the ocean's edge and just gazed upon the vastness of the waters? Or stood on top of a mountain and overlooked a massive set of valleys? If you haven’t, you should, as it is a great way to be humbled by the thought of just how small we are in this world.

Recently, a student asked me a question that I had never been asked before. Now, keep in mind that we at Reasons for Hope are in the ministry of fielding questions. Our desire is to answer those questions face-to-face in the moment, as well as publish books in our Glad You Asked! questions series, and many other avenues through media outreach. It’s what we do. So to encounter a question I haven’t heard before was refreshing!
Here’s what he asked, “What is the point of such a large universe? Why didn’t God just create planet Earth if that’s where everything happens, instead of creating all the other planets, stars, etc.? Why did He make everything else?” My answer to him was… “I don’t know.” (Side note: we teach people to answer I don’t know if you don’t know. Don’t make something up to look smart. Say, I don’t know and then research to find the answer for them.)
We talked about a few knee-jerk thoughts to address this “why,” but in the end, we exchanged numbers and agreed to keep this exchange going. As I typically do, I ran this question by peers of mine to see what they would say. Again, everyone kind of shrugged their shoulders and agreed, they didn’t have a great answer to it either. It really was a great question!
Proverbs 27:17
Iron sharpens iron, and one man sharpens another.
Bouncing ideas off your peers is a great practice―when you talk through ideas, it gives God the opportunity to expose the “ah-ha moment,” and that’s exactly what happened. Try to wrap your head around this. My humble answer to the question is the universe is so enormous because God couldn’t help it! In His efforts to create our very special and unique planet Earth, His massive power couldn’t help but create the magnificence we see around us. Every planet, star, and galaxy is like a byproduct of Him creating Earth. He couldn’t help it! Everything God does is absolutely incredible. A simple planet Earth was too easy for Him. The universe literally displays the GRANDNESS of who He is!
Psalm 8:3–4
When I consider your heavens, the work of your fingers, the moon and the stars, which you have set in place, what is mankind that you are mindful of them, human beings that you care for them?
Now, here’s the most amazing part: While the entirety of the Universe is almost unfathomable, our tiny little planet is where God sent His only Son to give His life so that we can be reconciled with our Heavenly Father. While God's immensive creative power is the best explanation for the size of His creation, His pure focus was on you, standing there at the water's edge.
As you ponder just how small you are compared to His vast creation, know this: He sees you with the love of Jesus Christ, reminding you that while you may be small, your purpose is as large as the universe. How? Think about it: your purpose and the universe have the same Creator.
Ephesians 1:3–4
Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who has blessed us in Christ with every spiritual blessing in the heavenly places, even as he chose us in him before the foundation of the world...
Now go live your life with the knowledge of God’s magnificence and love, and serving the purpose for which He created you!
