What a Difference One Letter Can Make Week 3
Song Connection:
Verse 2 – “Created in God’s image, formed with care, knit in the womb—He placed you there.”
Key Scriptures:
Psalm 139:13–16 – “You knitted me together in my mother’s womb.”
Genesis 1:27 – “So God created man in his own image…”
Ephesians 2:10 – "For we are His workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand, that we should walk in them."
Introduction:
Identity is one of the biggest struggles people face—“Who am I? What am I here for?” Our culture says we can define ourselves by how we feel, think or what we do.
But Paul answers this in Ephesians 2:10: If we’re in Christ, we know that we’re designed with a purpose. The Bible makes it very clear that God defines us—He made us, knows us, and gave us purpose. We are not accidents. We aren’t defined by failures or other people’s opinions. We are God’s MASTERPIECE.
Ephesians 2:10 Breakdown:
Key Words:
• “Workmanship” (Greek: poiēma)
• Means that which is made, a creation, a masterpiece.
• Our English word “poem” comes from this! Just as a poem is carefully crafted word by word, you are carefully crafted by God.
• Other translations render it “handiwork” or “masterpiece.”
• The emphasis: you are God’s intentional, artistic creation, not random chance.
• “Created in Christ Jesus”
• Not just physical creation (Genesis 1:27), but spiritual re-creation through salvation.
• 2 Corinthians 5:17 – “If anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation.”
• “For good works”
• God didn’t just save us from sin but also for something—living out His goodness in the world.
• These good works are not the cause of salvation but the result of it (Ephesians 2:8–9 makes that clear).
• “Prepared beforehand”
• God already has a plan for your life. The works are ready—you just need to walk in them.
• This shows God’s sovereignty: your life has divine purpose, not random chance.
What This Teaches Us About Identity:
I. You are God’s masterpiece
• Like an artist’s signature on a painting, God has His mark on you.
• Psalm 139:14 – “I praise you, for I am fearfully and wonderfully made.”
II. You are made new in Christ
• Salvation isn’t self-improvement; it’s transformation.
• You are not defined by your past mistakes but by Christ’s work in you.
III. You have a God-given purpose
• Every believer has been equipped with gifts to serve (1 Peter 4:10).
• Even small acts of obedience matter in God’s eternal plan.
Application: Walking as God’s Workmanship:
• Reject the lies of worthlessness. If God calls you His masterpiece, no one else’s opinion can define you.
• Look for daily opportunities to do good. This can be kindness at school, serving in church, or sharing Christ with a friend.
• Remember you were designed for impact. Your gifts, personality, and story are uniquely crafted for God’s glory.
Discussion Questions:
1. How does it change the way you see yourself when you KNOW that you’re made in God’s image?
2. Why do you think so many teens struggle with identity today?
3. How does KNOWING that you were “knit together” by God give you confidence?
Challenge:
Each day this week, thank God for one way He made you unique (your personality, talents, and/or even your quirks. (God called us a “peculiar” people so, there’s nothing wrong with being weird. Just be weird for the right reasons.)
Conclusion & Application:
Ephesians 2:10 reminds us that Christians are not just saved from sin, but saved for a purpose. You are God’s workmanship—His masterpiece—created in Christ to live a life of good works that He prepared in advance. Start living like that and don’t listen to the world’s lies.
