Bolos Return For Mat Match
The Kentuckians will take on the Bolos again Monday night in Memorial Auditorium in the main event of the weekly wrestling card and this time there will be a steel fence around the ring.
Tiny Anderson and Big Boy Brown, the Kentuckians, have requested the fence so that the Great Bolo and Bolo won’t be able to escape an unmasking.
In other bouts on the card Sandy and George Scott will meet Jack Vansky and Jan Madrid in another tag match and Dale Lewis meets Frank Valois in the 8:15 opener.

“When four of the roughest and toughest wrestlers EVER to appear in the Carolinas face off against each other, there’s bound to be quite a collision. Add to that a tuxedo-wearing, cane-carrying “gentleman” who provides even more dirty work while operating at ringside, and you have a rousing night’s work cut out for a wrestling referee.

That will be the scenario at the CHARLOTTE COLISEUM tonight when THE GREAT BOLO and BOLO, the masked roughnecks who have kept their identities secret for so long, go against equally rugged BRONCHO LUBICH and ALDO BOGNI (accompanied by their manager HOMER O’DELL) in a two-out-of-three falls BATTLE OF THE BULLIES clash.

It’s the headline bout on a seven match card which gets underway at 8:15 p.m. Tickets for this big show are now available at the COLISEUM box office and the NATIONAL HAT SHOP in downtown Charlotte.

ARGENTINA ROCCA, the man who has filled New York City’s Madison Square Garden to capacity no less than fifteen times, is also on the card in a special match against ruffian FRANK VALOIS in a one-fall event.

THE KENTUCKIANS, TINY ANDERSON and BIG BOY BROWN, will also make an appearance. They will put their combined 700 pounds against another huge team in SWEDE HANSON and “CRYBABY” CANNON. This tag match is set for the best-of-three falls.

RIP (don’t call me chicken) HAWK, yet another vicious character, returns to Charlotte for the first time since Christmas to meet popular Indian star BILLY TWO RIVERS in the main prelim match.

Three more single matches featuring top mat stars will round out tonight’s gigantic wrestling event.”

Lou Thesz Due Here For Mat Go

With the Kentuckians, Jake Smith and Luke Brown, winning a Texas death wrestling match this week before 4,545 fans, Promotor Cowboy Luttrall is making plans to handle an even larger crowd at the Fort Homer Hesterly Armory next week for an appearance of world heavyweight champion Lou Thesz.
Thesz, who has held the world title six times, more than any other wrestler, will defend he championship against Southern champion Hiro Matsuda of Japan.  The match will be covered specially for Tokyo newspapers.
Jake and Luke, who tower at seven feet and six-nine, “hanged” Saul Weingeroff for a victory over the wrestling manager and Kurt and Karl Von Brauner.
With the German twins doing most of the work, the threesome got off to a good start winning two of the first three falls and getting the upper hand in the fourth fall.
Weingeroff stepped in but his plans went awry and Jake applied the mule choker, a hangman’s hold, to win the fall.  Weingeroff was unable to answer the bell for the next fall and the decision went to the Kentuckians.
Matsuda and Duke Keomuka defeated Don Curtis and Ray Villmer; Malenko defeated Al Torres; Ramon Torres defeated Joe Tomasso, and the Crusader defeated Miguel Rodriguez.
In addition to arranging the Thesz-Matsuda title match next Tuesday night, Promoter Lutrall has signed Eddie Graham of Tampa to meet the Great Malenko of Russia.

Wrestling Returns To Auditorium

Wrestling Returns to City Auditorium Wednesday night after a week’s absence with co-features and a prelim.
The fabulous Kentuckians-Tiny Anderson and Big Boy Brown-return for a tag match with Two Ton Harris and Cry Baby Cannon.  The ref is just hoping to be able to find enough room left in the ring to get out of the way of the big men in the best two of three falls affair.
In the co-feature Pat O’Hara, a highly talented Irishman, faces rough and ready Ray Gordon in a best of three fall match.
The 8:30 prelim sends Johnny “Rubber Man” Walker against Bob Christy.  It is a one-fall match and is slated to last no longer than one-half an hour.

“The main event will be a best 2 out of 3 fall tag team match between the team that enjoys international aclaim and perhaps the most popular wrestling team today in the Kentuckians Luke and Lonny Brown from Morgans Corner, Ky.  Luke tips the scales at 325 lbs. and is 7 feet tall while lonny the youngest of four brothers stands only 6 foot and 4 inches and weighs only 245 lbs.
These wrestlers are very colorful and when they square off from their opponents Hos Hannigan 250 lbs. Charleston, W. Va. and Chris Averoff 228 lbs. Athens, Greece, there should be plenty of rough action.”

“I went back & dug up an interview that Scott Teal published in his “Whatever Happened To..?”, issue #22, June of 1996. In it , Dutch Savage (real last name was Stewart-Dutch says his father was Frank Stewart) talks about his family, and how one of his younger brothers got into pro wrestling , and his brother got him into the “business” in the early ’60’s. His brother changed his wrestling name to “Luke Brown”, and became one of the original “Kentuckians”, with “Tiny” (Jake-“Grizzly”) Smith. Dutch talks aout himself wrestling later (still in the early ’60’s) as Lonnie Brown. He wrestled in Georgia in 1965 as Dutch Savage, and did well there as a lead heel, teaming some with veteran Mario Galento.
Anyway, before Ga., Dutch wrestled in Tenn., for Nick Gulas, as the masked Dr.X (around 1964), in the Knoxville, Johnson City, Bristol, & Kingsport east Tenn. region. Dutch said in the interview that when Luke broke him ito the business, they worked as Luke & Lonnie, the Brown Brothers. That was during a “break” from the Kentuckians for Luke. Savage said that years later that his brother “Luke” (he never said his real name) worked for him in the Pacific Northwest, being a ref & driving the ring truck.
So, going by this ’96 interview that Scott did with Dutch Savage, Dutch makes it sound like he & ” Kentuckian” Luke Brown really WERE blood brothers, true brothers. Got me, though–I’m just going by what Savage says in the interview with Scott, from Scott’s issue #22.”

FOLLOW UP:
I talked with Dutch not too long ago and he corrected himself. Apparently, he looked at Luke Brown as a brother, but they weren’t actually “blood” brothers. He really seems to feel like they were that close, so he took it upon himself to make the statement. Hope this clears the confusion up.

Chappell: Contrast Apollo to some of these huge babyfaces you wrestled, like Haystack Calhoun. Or the Kentuckians….Tiny Anderson and Big Boy Brown.
Hawk: Oh gee, the Kentuckians—they were a couple of cases…
Chappell: (laughing) I bet it was tough having a decent match with those guys!
Hawk: Let me tell you what, Tiny Anderson had a headlock on me one night and wouldn’t let it loose…so I butted him, and I butted him, and I kept butting him, until he finally let me out of that headlock. He didn’t like that very much!  Wrestling those really big guys was tough.
