1960 Match History

Man Mountain Campbell

January 20, 1960 – National Guard Armory – Lafayette, IN

Happy Humphrey

My father told me that when he first started wrestling that he traveled a lot with Happy Humphrey.  I met him as a young man when he was working in a shoe repair store and had quit wrestling.  (By the way, he is in the Guinness Book of World Records for the most weight loss for an individual that didn’t have surgery etc.  Unfortunately he gained it all back later.)  On one particular trip my father was driving late at night.  He was the newbie and had to drive.  Happy was in the back seat sleeping.  They were driving an old police car that had a spotlight that they could move with a handle on the inside of the car.  My father turned the spotlight around so it pointed into the back seat of the car.  He then turned it on and started screaming, “They’re going to hit us!!”  He said Happy woke up to that light shining in his face and started screaming and jumping around so violently in the back seat that he almost lost control of the car.  He never told me how Happy got even with him.

Campbell, Schmidt Mat Foes
“Man Mountain Campbell, the 311-pound bear hug specialist from Bear Creek, KY., today occupied the wrestling limelight hereabouts.
A referee Tuesday night, he’ll be he main event attraction next Tuesday night at the Minneapolis auditorium.  And his foe will be the German “baddie” Hans Schmidt_by Schmidt’s request-in a one-hour, one-fall match.
Schmidt is still in a huff over Campbell’s refereeing last night.  The German was teamed with his manager Hans Herman in a tag team match with Tiny Mills and Stan Kowalski before 5,838 fans in the Armory.”

“While the women’s bout draws attention it is secondary to the main even  which finds Tiny Mills and Stan Kowalski, two of the meanest  and roughest wrestlers in the game, risking their World Tag Team Championship against Roy McClarty and Don (Man Mountain) Campbell, a 311-pound giant.
The title match will be two out of three falls with a one hour time limit.  Mills, the wild Canadian lumberjack, insisted on the time limit before signing for the bout.  For three months Mills and Campbell, ranked as the strongest man in the mat game, have been feuding.  They’ll have a chance to settle their differences as a feature of fair (sic) week.”

“In the semi-main event Enrico Torres will oppose Hombre Montana.  Neither of these fellows needs any introduction as their past performances in Santa Rosa Speak for themselves.  Their opponents, Man Mountain Camp and Mr. Kleen are new to the area.  Campbell is a 230 (sic) pounder from Kentucky who keeps pet bears around his home just for wrestling purposes.  His bear hug is powerful, so it seems he has learned a lot from his pets.
Mr. Kleen, a 6-6 205 pound gent will enter the ring to “clean” up his opponent.  He thrives on dirty work and is known as one that will sometimes starts the illegal tactics.”

Ramon Torres and Sam Steamboat came out on the short end of the main event in Santa Rosa last Friday night.
“The team of Man Mountain Campbell and Mr. Kleen had the Sonoma County Sports Fairgrounds wrestling fans worked up as they used just about every nasty trick in the book.
Torres had been tossed out of the ring late in the main event and, with a burst of anger, came flying back.  As he attempted to leap over the ropes his ankle caught and he went down with his full weight on his heel.  The referee immediately called an end to he match.  Torres was unable to continue.
At the point the falls were even and it appeared Torres and Steamboat would end up victoriously.  The ring physician examined Ramon.  His ankle was sprained.
  Kleen Crush Scores
The first fall of the match went to Kleen as he demonstrated the famous Kleen Crush on Ramon.  The battle opened with Sam pitted against Mr. Kleen.  Then Torres and Campell went at each other, and Sam tried to help out but was thwarted by the referee.
Throughout the match it was a case of too much weight for the favorites.  When either Sam or Ramon got the advantage their opponents lifted them off like flies.  Ramon attempted to drop kick Kleen but was met with a stone wall.  He attempted to come off the ropes with a body slam but once again it was like hitting a stone wall.
At one point in the match, Kleen invited Steamboat to body slam him but was not taken up.  Sam instead came off the ropes and landed a fist flush in Kleen’s face.
Despite Campbell’s weight – and strength – advantage, the boys finally got him in the second fall in 16 minutes and 14 seconds.  Ramon came through with knee lifts and drop kicks.  Campbell was almost knocked out.
Hard Time for Ref
At this point the referee had difficulty stopping the match.  Both sides seemed to want to go on without the usual rest period, and Kleen and Campbell received the worst of the blows.
The local police had some difficulties also.  They had to restrain a few of the “gentlemen” fans from going into the ring to show their displeasure.”

Ramon, Sam Win Rugged Go
Ramon Torres and Sam Steamboat cleaned the arena Friday night as they defeated Mr. Kleen and Man Mountain Campbell.
Kleen and Campbell, claimants to the tag-team title, proved to be no match for the winners in the Sonoma County Fairgrounds Pavilion wrestling main event.
Avenging an earlier loss to Kleen and Campbell, Torres and Steamboat came prepared for action.  Kleen started the match refusing to break a hold and landed many illegal blows.  Torres came out with methods of his own.  Despite his size disadvantage.  Ramon was throwing Kleen around the ring.
Working together, Ramon and Sam took turns administering punishment.  Kleen was worked into their corner and given a rough going over.
Actions Protested
Protesting to the referee, Campbell only gave the men more time to apply pressure to Kleen.  Sam and Ramon had both foes in the ring at one point.  Kleen, in fact, was so confused he was landing punches on his own partner.  Steamboat stayed in the ring to take on Campbell.  Once again both boys gave Campbell the works and finally Sam ended it by pinning Campbell with a reverse shoulder press in 13 minutes and 41 seconds.
Sam Gets His Lumps
Mr. Kleen and Campbell, giants gave sam the worst of it in the struggle for the second fall when they had him in their corner.
Kleen and Campbell were then circled by the police officers as they went to the dressing room.
