Hans SCHMIDT has no love for MAN MOUNTAIN CAMPBELL, his main event opponent at the MINNEAPOLIS AUDITORIUM tonight.
The big German with the constant frown barked, “That big, wind bag of a hillbilly came bouncing into Minneapolis claiming he would take on anybody – a punk like that with about a half year in the professional wrestling game. He’ll get an idea of what it’s like to run up against a seasoned veteran when he steps through the ropes tonight.”
Schmidt is boiling mad and he’s been that way ever since the main event bout a week ago when Campbell, serving as the referee, cracked three ribs on Schmidt’s partner, Hans Hermann, forcing the latter to grab a train for California to recuperate.
“You talk about a miscarriage of justice,” Schmidt bellowed. “That big ape was put in the ring to keep things in hand. He goes wild when the crowd gives him a little encouragement and look what happens. My partner, a physical beauty hobbling to the dressing room like a cripple all because that paunch – belly backwoods idiot went goofy.”
Schmidt slammed his fist on the table and yelled, “Print this – tell the wrestling fans I’ll Blitzkrieg that Kentucky creep. When Hans finishes April 12, Campbell will head so far back into the Kentucky hills no one will be able to locate him until it’s time to come out of hiding and play Santa Claus next December.”
The comments were carried right back to Campbell and the quiet – spoken gent from Bear Creek, Ky., drawled, “Well, neighbor, that’s just what I want. When I came here I said I was shooting for main event billing and the top money that goes right along with it. I hope he is boiling mad – that will give me an edge, because I keep cool all the time in that ring. If he wants to wrestle mountain style, that’s right down my alley.”
Campbell was just warming up to the subject. He continued with, “I’ll tell you one thing: Schmidt may get by with plenty of that rough stuff against smaller opponents, but he won’t pull any of that guff with me. I’ll bounce him around that ring like a ping-pong ball in a rain barrel.”
Schmidt will give away four inches in height – 6-4 compared to 6-8 – and 61 pounds in weight – 250 compared to 311. There isn’t much of a difference on speed, either, because Campbell can move with surprising speed for such a big man.
